A few facts about the Cochlear

General knowledge

A cochlear implant may not work as you think it does. In fact, the cochlear implant does not even use your ears to hear. The CI skips past the ears and goes straight to stimulating the cochlear nerve. It bypasses all possible damage to the outer and inner ear. However, if a person's hearing loss is due to the lack of a cochlear nerve, then the cochlear implant does not work. Electrodes are inserted into the cochlea inside the ear, stimulating the cochlear nerve. This stimulation sends signals through the nerve, which gets interpreted by the brain as sound. It takes in sound from the surrounding environment via a sort of microphone that attaches to the back of the ear.  This is called the external processor that connects with the internal processor that sends the sound signals into the cochlear nerve.

Surgical Procedure

- surgery takes ~2hrs

- Same-day surgery, where you can have the surgery and leave on the same day after a few hours of observation

 

1) An incision is made behind the ear, and make another opening into the mastoid bone to insert the electrode into the cochlea

2) The electrode is then inserted 

3) Surgeon then puts a internal processor in-between the bone and muscle behind the ear

4) The surgeon then closes the incision and the patient will stay in the hospital for a few hours of observation and recuperation from the anesthia.
